Thors Design: reusing Azobé wood

Thors tables

Reusing and transforming the 50-year-old rustic Azobé wood from decommissioned wharfs in Denmark into simple and stylish designer furniture, is the fundamental idea behind all of the furniture from Thors-Design.

An interplay between cool galvanised iron and the wood's original raw, rustic look gives the furniture a modern feel with heart and soul that matches the modern home as well as professional environments.

Thors-Design recycles Azobé wood with the utmost respect for its uniqueness. When making furniture, the manufacturer always consider the way the wood moves and works. So, there are no two identical pieces of wood. All furniture by Thors-Design is custom-made.

Azobé wood is one of the world’s heaviest and most robust types of wood and contains a high level of natural oils. Today the Azobé wood is still strong and durable despite many years of exposure to the natural elements. The furniture has a long life cycle and is virtually indestructible. It can therefore be used indoors as well as outdoors all year around and can be enjoyed for generations.

Applicata - DK

Blossom, Uragano, arch:you and Nipple

We are passionate about finding interesting design with new thinking that will be functional today, tomorrow and for years to come. The designers come from Denmark, and some have just arrived on the scene, while others have long experience. What their designs have in common is a simple, stringent expression that is traditional, yet forward-looking at the same time.

The Pitti Uomo summer week is over. Florence's shopwindows were full of black + black + black dresses for next winter: black + stones, black + tartan, black + velvet. Luckily, I could find something different, too.

Billiani 1911 - Italian Seating

GRADISCA designed by Werther Toffoloni

Billiani is a century old Italian manufacturer dedicated to wood and seating. In their production, I expecially love these two collection: Gradisca and Doll. Excellent quality, comfortable, with a bit of playfulness I appreciate so much.
GRADISCA is the collection designed by Werther Toffoloni and produced by the Italian manufacturer Billiani. It's a stained or lacquered solid beech side chair with seat and back options: stained or lacquered multiply; upholstered; sealed with tough laminate.
DOLL, designed by Emilio Nanni, is an extensive collection comprising chairs, armchairs, barstool and table; solid beech or metal frames. Stained or lacquered wooden seats and backs, optionally with upholstery.

DOLL designed by Emilio Nanni
Wood was in our hearts right from the start, and as soon as we were born we had solid roots, firm and deep convictions.
This attachment clearly made us stand out at once.
In wood we have, from time to time, reread the traces of our past to make them become thoughts, plans, and new ideas.
Over the course of a whole century architecture, fashion, clothing, design, art and lifestyles have changed rapidly, almost overwhelming us.
The Billiani product range has constantly been enriched, leading to fruitful relationships with designers,
looking for a balance between practicality and creativity.
With the desire to produce beautiful seating, yes, seating to let dreams rest easy,
and to respond to these ever-changing lifestyles.

Boca do Lobo - Limited Edition collection - Portugal

The Symphony cabinet - Limited Edition collection

Tortuga - Limited Edition collection

BOCA DO LOBO's Limited Edition collection is made from very unique pieces. I noticed their stand at the last Milan expo and I thought I had to remember them when I need something really unusual for a shop interior, e.g. What about  the "Diamond" sideboard for a clothing store? (There is also a "chocolate" vo!!)
BOCA DO LOBO furniture produces beautiful pieces which are passionately inspired and handcrafted in Portugal by a staff composed by designers and artisans. "Our artisan’s wisdom, accumulated from years of experience, is instilled with love and dedication in the art that they perform. No detail or element is overlooked as we offer the best at the frontier between design and art. "

Free Cursive Fonts Generator

I prepared the little gift above for the birth of Bianca, the baby of a dear friend. I bought two neon pink frames from Habitat and, to personalize them, I decided to handwrite the baby's name. Looking for a free cursive fonts generator on the web, I found the FontMeme's one. FontMeme's Free Cursive Font
is a very easy and quick tool to use. You can generate text designs based on your selection of fonts, colors and sizes. You can then download the image for your own use.
I chosed the Olhoboi Trial 2011 font. I also chosed a big size to reduce it 'till the right dimensions while printing (I needed 8x8 cm). Finally, I copied the fonts on a precious ivory paper using my Rotring ArtPen.
The second frame will guest the first photo of Bianca.

Free Colors Palette Generators

Tiffany Pratt - Pimpelwit

I'm working with fluorescent corals (tomorrow I'll publish other images) and I was wondering which are the best free colors palette generators online. I tried these four: Css Drive - my preferred because it  let you create your personal palette from colors suggested - Big Huge Lab - I think it's the most true to your image - De Graeve - good job, but it works with images taken from the web and not from your hard disk - Pictaculous  - a little minimalist for me. Which are the one that you like more? I'd love to have suggestions, so answer to this post if you know others free and good colors palette tools!

Globe Light by Studio Vit - Salone Satellite, Milano 2013

studio vit has presented their third collection, Globe lights,  at
Milan Salone Satellite 2013.

Globe lights is a collection consisting of small globe shaped pendants
and large steel reflectors. The matt ceramic spheres can be used on their
own, grouped together or to cast light on to reflectors in gloss painted
metal. The collection explores how geometric volumes relate to each
other and the juxtaposition of materials and light.

So pure and elegant, I love it!

ps: studio vit is the result of a collaboration and dialogue between Swedish
designers Helena Jonasson and Veronica Dagnert. Helena has worked
in the furniture industry since graduating with a degree in industrial design,
and Veronica has a background in fashion and a Masters from Central
Saint Martins in London. Both live and work in London.

Pandarosa: Vanilla Café in Berlin

Pandarosa, or the PANDAS for friends, are the brainchild behind artist / designer team, Ariel A. and Andrea B.
As a studio they specialise in the installation of large scale mural works, but also apply their skills across a wide range of applications including illustration, branding, design, illustrative interiors & decorative patterns, while at once conducting their own exhibiting art practice, locally and abroad.
This diverse approach allows them to apply their imaginative creations across a range of outcomes such as adorning the walls of Hotel Fox in Copenhagen, illustrating the pages of publications like Frame, developing the branding for Chorus label.

Their work for Vanilla, the cosy coffee shop in East Berlin,  included art direction, branding & identity, signage & interior design.

"Our aim for Vanilla was to create a slight 'retro' atmosphere by utilising a soft colour palate which could be implemented across all promotional material as well as within the retail space. Such approach required a flexible identity solution, which could be applied across multiple facets, yet refrain from simply being 'repetitive' in nature.
We successfully conceived this by developing a series of patterns motifs based on the interviewing of individual letters found within the typographic solution created.
These were then applied across all branding aspects including signage, custom feature wallpaper, stationary, packaging & interior."
